Frequently Asked Questions

What is PetVet Medic® Activated Charcoal?

A veterinarian-formulated, beef-flavored gel for dogs and cats. It helps bind certain toxins in the gut and supports occasional diarrhea, gas, or stomach discomfort

What makes PetVet Medic® Activated Charcoal different?

Made in the USA in an FDA-registered, GMP-certified facility. Every batch is quality and microbial tested. Our patent-pending flavored gel is ready to use and easier to give.

When should I use PetVet Medic® Activated Charcoal?

Use for certain toxin ingestions when your pet is stable, alert, and able to swallow safely. It works best when given early. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison control for any questions.

How long after ingestion can activated charcoal be given?

It works best as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 hours. In some cases, it may still help up to 4 hours after ingestion, depending on the toxin and your pet's condition.

Does activated charcoal replace the emergency vet?

No. PetVet Medic® Activated Charcoal is not a replacement for veterinary care.  It may be used as an early intervention while you are seeking veterinary guidance or heading to an emergency clinic.

What toxins can activated charcoal help with?

Charcoal helps with some toxins, including grapes/raisins, chocolate, caffeine, THC, nicotine, onions/garlic, some medications, rodenticides, pesticides, plants, and moldy foods.

What substances does activated charcoal NOT work well for?

It does not reliably bind every toxin, including xylitol, alcohols, heavy metals, antifreeze, salt, caustic substances, or hydrocarbons like gasoline, kerosene, or paint thinner.

When should I NOT give activated charcoal?

Do not give if your pet is vomiting, symptomatic, weak, seizing, abnormal, unconscious, unable to swallow, having trouble breathing, dehydrated, in shock, or may have an obstruction.

Why is the stool black after use?

Black stool is common because charcoal passes through the digestive tract. Contact your vet if vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, lethargy, worsening signs, or other concerns occur.

What is the shelf life?

PetVet Medic® Activated Charcoal has a 2-year shelf life from the date of manufacture. Store in a cool, dry place.

What if I gave it and my pet did not eat anything toxic?

It is unlikely to cause harm in most healthy pets when given appropriately.

Important Safety Note
For suspected toxin ingestion, contact your veterinarian, ASPCA Animal Poison Control, or Pet Poison Helpline immediately. Do not give if your pet is unstable or cannot swallow safely.
